Clean water and a wide variety of underwater habitats make for outstanding fishing opportunities on the St. Croix River! The Indianhead Flowage north of Taylors Falls is recognized as one of the finest smallmouth bass fisheries in the country. Downstream of Taylors Falls, the river is plentiful with many warmer water species. Three public launches in Taylors Falls and Franconia provide plenty of great places to cast a line (and enjoy the stunning views) in our National Scenic Riverway!

Smallmouth are especially active both north and south of the dam. Downstream of Taylors Falls, Minnesota, the river is home to many warmer water species: bass, walleyes, saugers, northern pike, muskellunge, catfish, suckers, sturgeon, carp, and pan fish.
The lower 125 miles (201 km) of the river forms the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The river is a National Scenic Riverway under the protection of the National Park Service. A hydroelectric plant at St. Croix Falls supplies electricity to the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area.
