Have you heard of the Chisago Lakes Water Trail? If not, you’re in for a splash of a good time.
Enjoying the lakes is a favorite Minnesota pastime, and that’s especially true in Chisago Lakes. The Chisago Lakes community has a rich lake history dating back to the 1800s. At that time, many of the current lakes were part of one large lake which was called “Ki Chi Saga” by the Ojibway people, meaning fair and lovely waters.
Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, and Canoeing in Chisago Lakes
It’s an amazing experience to paddle out on the sparkling blue water, floating and relaxing while watching the sunrise and hearing the call of the loons.
Explore the beauty and adventure on the Chisago Lakes Water Trail. Paddle Board, Canoe, or Kayak over 10 lakes with 100+ miles of shoreline and 5,000 acres of water connected by small channels or short portages. Whether you are a seasoned paddler or a beginner, there is a lake for you in Chisago Lakes.
The Chisago Lakes Water Trail extends 10 miles and features pristine shorelines, islands, and peninsulas. Some of the lakes included in the Water Trail are South Center Lake, North Center Lake, Bull Lake, North Lindström Lake, South Lindström Lake, Chisago Lake, Green Lake, Little Green Lake, and Linn Lake (see details below about each lake). Plus, there are other lakes to explore in the area, including School Lake, Lake Mattson, Kroon Lake, Lake Martha, Little Lake, Spider Lake, and Comfort Lake.
I recently had the opportunity to talk with local paddle board adventurer Tracy Lundeen. Tracy started a group called the Chisago Lakes Paddle Squad that meets weekly to explore different lakes in the area.
Tell us about Chisago Lakes Paddle Squad and why you started the group.
Paddleboarding is a great way to explore lakes without a pontoon or boat. I find it calming and relaxing. I started this group to connect with people in the area who love to paddle and get out on the lakes.
Can anyone come to a Chisago Lakes Paddle Squad event?
Yes, anyone can join the group. Kayaks are welcome, not only paddleboards. And it’s not just for locals; visitors to the area can join, too.
What is your favorite lake in Chisago Lakes to paddle?
My favorite lake is Comfort Lake. It’s a nice lake, usually calm and on the smaller side. It’s a great lake for beginners.
Best time of day to get out on the lakes?
The best time to get out on the lakes is definitely morning. But I’ve found the best time for the group to meet because of work and life obligations is at 6 p.m., and we hit the lake at 6:30pm.
Anything else you want to share about paddle boarding?
If you are a beginner and not comfortable standing, many boards have a seat option, or you can just sit until you are comfortable. People worry too much about falling off; I say it’s just water! It is great for balance and a great way to clear your mind, and these days, you can get an inflatable board for $250. Way cheaper than a pontoon! I have a Paddle North brand and highly recommend it. The inflatable boards are great, as you can take them anywhere. Just pump up and go!
Thank you for the information, Tracy! If you are interested in paddle boarding and meeting new people, check out the group’s Facebook page HERE.
