Herberg Century Farm – Families whose farms are at least 50 acres in size and have been in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years, qualify to be recognized as a Century Farm. In 1991, the Herberg farm was recognized by the Minnesota State Fair and The Farmer Magazine as a Century Farm. They received a sign designating the Century Farm status, and a commemorative certificate signed by the president of the State Fair and Governor Carlson.
In 2011, Leland Herberg (Taylors Falls High School Class of 1944) was honored with an Outstanding Staff/Faculty Award, for his dedication to the school district. Lee, as he is commonly called, was born in Shafer and with the exception of US Naval service with the South Pacific Fleet from 1944-1946, he lived all his life on his Century Farm. From 1948-1991 he drove a school bus and farmed. Before the first day of school, he would drive his bus route introducing himself to the first graders, new students, and their families. In 1952, he married Charlotte Robinson, the school secretary, and they had three sons, Wes, Wayne, and Tom. Besides farming and bus driving, Lee worked afternoons as a carpenter. Char sometimes substituted driving for him. Lee was an accomplished accordion player, and through the years was known to spend many weekends playing for dances. Lee had a passion for helping people and a strong dedication to his church. Sadly, he passed away in September 2015.
NOTE: The Chisago Lakes Area Community Foundation thanks the Herberg family for allowing them to install a quilt on the well-maintained barn that is adjacent to Highway 8. The view of the scenic Century Farm, and the barn quilt, are enjoyed by thousands of travelers each day!
