Al applied his knowledge of design to celebrate the art of glassblowing in this work. A longtime glassblower, and the proprietor of Al’s Center Saloon (now Tony’s Bar & Grill), he chose a goblet form as motif and the colors of beer & burgundy as his palette.
Repetition of the form is a nod to quilting. “I especially enjoyed making the goblet feet come together through the center of the design and the angles created by such a simple concept,” states the artist.
A Minnesota native, Al earned a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Minnesota and worked as a studio glassblower in Colorado and in Washington for many years before returning to settle in his home state. “Appreciation and respect for the glass is my most significant influence,” he says. “I’m exhilarated by the demands of the process and enjoy meeting the challenges of timing and intuition required to manage hot glass.”
The artist resides in Franconia Township and maintains Alan Honn Glass Showroom in Center City.
